Thought I'd give this another try and given that I watch a lot of movies I probably have a lot to add. I'll do this one post at a time.

Ong Bak 2

Unless you've been living on another planet with no form of telecommunication other than a combination of smoke signals and shrieks, then you would have heard about Ong Bak 2.

Not a direct sequel to the first, moreso a prequel telling the story about the origins of the Buddha statue from the first movie...Well at least that's what I believe. ...

Here's a topic that pops up from time to time.

Depending on the way in which you look at the HK film industry, you'll either be happy or sad as we move into the 21st century. From being one of the top three movie producing countries in the world, HK has slipped far down the chart. Though, while less movies are produced each year, they are more polished and have bigger budgets than just a couple of decades ago.

But what about all the kung fu? There aren't anywhere near the same number ...

Okay, after writing the review of Transformers 2 you can guess where I'm going. But here's another case of a huge Hollywood blockbuster that really is just a diamond-studded turd.

True, this isn't a movie that is critically acclaimed, but oh well...

So what movies do you hate with a passion, but it seems that everyone else loves.

To answer both criteria as in the topic line, for me it'd probably be -

Well, to kick it off, Cast Away. I should have put Tom Hanks on my 'hated ...

Long live the Wizz Fizz!

So anyone else gone partly insane from a sugar high like myself? I mean, anyone else find a food product from there childhood and suddenly get hit with flashbacks?

Jet Li is quite a talented onscreen fighter and generally a reasonably good actor (given the role). That said, it's really sad when his US productions are lacklustre and more fizzle than anything else. Sure he can produce the goods at on set for the action, but more often than not, his non-HK movies have something inherently wrong with them - script, co-stars, etc.

Your mission board-goers is to vote for the worst of Jet's foreign exploits - and let's hear why.

We've all had times when we've watched a movie and recognise someone that we've seen tonnes of times before. We can't place them and we just don't know their names. Especially given that this is an Asian-centric forum, if you don't speak and particularly read Chinese, it's often hard to find the name of the minor players and extras in films (think about ...

Again, to bring up Above the Law I was watching the fight between Cynthia Rothrock and Karen Shepherd.

A lot of people rave about this scene, which probably is the pinnacle of Cynthia's martial arts movie career. (Personally, I don't find it that impressive).

Anyway, I recall reading that this was the only time that Karen Shepherd made a movie in HK, and now after watching this scene again I can sort of understand why.

Perhaps up to 70% of the fight scene wasn't Karen at all but ...

I would like to feature these podcast editions on the Lam Site as well. It is a "waste" not to, I think. They are so good and so informative and entertaining.

I will find out where and how exactly, but before that I would love to ask your permission. Are you alright with that? I will let you know the details before I do it.

Thanks in advance!

Stoo, I would be really happy if you introduced Podcast on Fire here and put news and new project links here.

Drunken Master's post reminded me that I had wanted to open a separate topic for that great site.

And I would be really grateful if that Lam Ching Ying edition you had could be somehow heard on the Lam Ching Ying site. Is it possible? As a link? As a file? Could we possibly talk about it?

Thank you for considering it.

I recently read something online (don't remember where) that said Westerners, in general, do not enjoy the wuxia genre because the blend of fantasy and reality feels unrealistic and unbelievable. This is apparently why relatively few wuxia novels are translated into English. I really don't get it. I was raised up on Western fare and I LOVE wuxia!

I also feel that the notion that Westerners are uncomfortable with the blend is fundamentally incorrect because wuxia has many immediate correlations ...

Bollocks to that! I think it's impossible for a movie to be perfect, let alone for a movie to be good enough that you could watch it endlessly.

There are movies however which I do love, though I don't know if I could commit to saying that I love watching them every ...

I just watched Mr Vampire 2 the other day and I think that this would have to be my favourite out of the series. I know a lot of people will push for the original due to the 'coolness' and 'originality' it brought to HK cinema and cinema in general.

...but the sequel is what really does it for me. This was the first of the Mr Vampire series that I watched -- buying the dvd because Yuen Biao is featured in it -- but it really has the goods. The humour is still fresh, the setting is modern ...

I think someone out there may be able to shed some light on this.

This weekend I've been watching a lot of Sammo Hung classics, so of course I'm seeing people like Yuen Biao and Corey Yuen pop up occasionally. I was thinking about the dominance that Sammo and his Peking opera classmates have had on HK cinema, particularly in the late-70s and 80s, and then started wondering about LCY's schoolmates.

I'm not really aware of who else that Lam Ching Ying trained with under Madame Fan Fok ...

Most board-goers will know that I'm not that happy with Ip Man: Donnie Yen's latest offering, courtesy of his now usual director, Wilson Yip, and choreography by Sammo Hung.

One of the major shortfalls of the film was the choreography itself, which is shocking (I know!) considering that Sammo is a fine director and an even better choreographer. Given that he's choreographed and directed two other Wing Chun movies, Warriors Two and The Prodigal Son I decided to try watch both to try and ...

Is any of you have this movie at home? I have a problem. I watched it yesterday and to be honest I am puzzled.

The Database includes Lam Ching Ying and Wu Ma as uncredited actors in that movie (as well as Yuen King Tan, who is REALLY having a role in this movie) but the other two actors', LCY and Wu Ma's scene is from the "original" Swordsman movie. In this case Sam Hui should be added as uncredited as well, cause that scene is completely copied into the opening scene of this movie.

Hey Guys! Some advice...

Donnie Yen's Ip Man is available on Blu-Ray. I'm considering buying it, but it's not cheap like a DvD, it's close to $30! I just want to ask if anyone has seen it and is it as good as they say? Lots of Wing Chun style action?

Sounds like it would be incredible in HI-Def.

For those that don't know Jason Statham, you're probably missing a lot of fun as he's been in some great movies over the years:

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Snatch

Revolver

The Italian Job (remake of course!)

The Bank Job

Crank

War aka Rogue Assassin

and the Transporter series

Not everyone if a fan, which I think is pretty understandable considering the way that he grumbles in every-single-movie. You don't really get a great deal of 'acting' out of him in terms ...
