Agreed. Truly an awesome experience to watch.

As a MA lover I have to admit that the action isn't fantastically choreographed like the later Venoms' flicks, but I think this movie really was more than just a fight movie. Same could be said for 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

Now this is one of the Venons films I have seen and really enjoyed. Again, I have to make time to watch this one again as a repeat viewing is long overdue. My favourite Venoms film so far "Crippled Avengers", but there are still a few I haven't got around to yet.

Ahh yes, Crippled Avengers! It's actually the second Venom film (chronologically), and another fine performance. They were really making it difficult for themselves with some of the stunts on that one...

Further consensus here. Crippled Avengers was an instant favourite for me. My absolute favourite scene in the movie is where Sun Chien is training and showing off his kicks...you know, when he kicked that wooden dummy smashing it to pieces. Phillip Kwok's acrobatic performance, especially the training session with Chiang Sheng were pretty amazing too. Those guys are just too nimble and dexterous!

I am still in the discovery stage with Shaw Brothers films. I got into Asian action films through an interest in Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan films at first, and then Gunplay films directed by John Woo, so Golden Harvest was my introduction. I've also seen a lot of the independant (Made in Taiwan cheapies & Bruceploitation.) studio stuff, but that is solely because so much of this is easily available for rental in the UK. Admittedly mostly of these are awful scan and pan English dubs with scratchy prints. There are very few Shaw Brothers films that you can simply just rent. It surprises me really that no UK distributer has ever picked up on the Shaw Brothers films. Momentum Pictures picked up about half a dozen of the Celestial releases for UK distribution a few years back, but generally the only way to see Shaws is to import or watch poor quality uploads on You Tube.

I believe Momentum may be distributing some of the Dragon Dynasty releases here soon and there are a few Shaws amongst them.

It's pretty difficult trying to find much of any HK cinema, let alone Shaws movies in Australia too. I bought quite a lot of SB movies a few years ago but had to give that up because it was too expensive and I was still a uni student. One fortunate thing though was that I was friends with one of the distributors here in Australia who sold primarily action films and brought in all the remastered celestial/IVL reprints of SB movies.

I did the same. I purchased as many of the Celestial remasters as I possibly could. I was purchasing from cd-wow, dddhouse, etc... it was actually not too expensive to import them to America.

Of course, you need a region free player, or a way to make the disc region free... Wink

Funny you should mention the dvd-region specs Danshiell. When I bought a new dvd player (a cheapy of course) it actually had a handbook that showed you how to make the player region free.

Oh yes, some of them do that very thing...

The BEST DvD players, in all respects including the ability to make them region free, are these:

I've bought four! rofl

Five Deadly Venoms Empty
PostSubject: Batman: The Brave and the Bold   Five Deadly Venoms EmptyFri Apr 24, 2009 6:25 pm

I turned on the tv this morning to watch the saturday cartoons (as you do!) and saw an episode that had more than a passing nod to The Five Deadly Venoms and Shaw's movies in general.

In a cartoon series which seems to have lost more and more relevance to the original comics and now more like a sensationalised tabloid (I mean look at the name!) the new Batman cartoons are shocking. This episode though made me laugh a few times at just how outrageous it has become - well in last week's episode Batman went into space and fought some aliens.

In today's episode, Batman went back to hist 'roots' and remembered his training under the tutelage of Master Wong Fei. The master asked him and his four other brothers to take on the identity of different animals, so Batman obviously picked up the 'Bat' mask. His other brothers were 'Shark', 'Vulture', 'Fox' (the bad guys) and 'Tiger'. For most of the episode, the guys stay in costume too; very reminiscent of the training scenes from Five Deadly Venoms.

Anyway, the bad guys steal the 'wu dang' totem after poisoning Master Wong Fei with "five deadly venoms". It transforms each of them into the animal of the style they practice. And where do they decide to go an launch their first assault on the world? Hong Kong of course.

Very ridiculous I know, but I'm going to have to watch next week to see how much lower this show can get!
