The Mr Vampire Series

I just watched Mr Vampire 2 the other day and I think that this would have to be my favourite out of the series. I know a lot of people will push for the original due to the 'coolness' and 'originality' it brought to HK cinema and cinema in general.

...but the sequel is what really does it for me. This was the first of the Mr Vampire series that I watched -- buying the dvd because Yuen Biao is featured in it -- but it really has the goods. The humour is still fresh, the setting is modern and thus more accessible, LCY isn't tied down to his now famous tough-as-nails character as so adds a new dimension, there is a singing number, and there is an exceptional cast.

Other movies in the series, particularly the first and third also rank highly with me, but I have to put the sequel on a whole new level.

What are other fans thoughts?

I thought i am the only one who likes the other parts.Actually i don't udnerstand why people claim that Mr Vampire 1985 and Magic Cop are the best,i think these are overrated films(no i don't mean they are avergae,they are superb) but movies like Mr.Vampire 2,Mr Vampire 3 and Mr.Vampire 1992 are the best vampire flicks i have ever seen.And other sifu Lam movies like Hocus Pocus,Vampire versus Vampire,Spiritual Trinity,Crazy Safari are amognst most underrated ones.
Well,i am Lam Ching Ying fan,and i admire everything he did in movies.And he deserves a better attention...

I already had a few of these, but others I have only seen the once and two I haven't seen at all. I'll have to have a Mr Vampire week sometime I suppose.

I like Magic Cop though. As fans we will all have our own favourites.

What an incredible collection of dvds. Don't get that in Australia. What was the collection called?

I got it off ebay. (See link below) All 8 films are on the one disc so the quality isn't the best, but it is better quality than you get with a VCD.

Cool. By any chance does the disc itself have a dodgey picture on it? A mate of mine bought a 2-disc Donnie Yen set when we were in China (had something like 15-16 movies in total). Thing was that the dvd had a picture of Tony Jaa's body with Donnie Yen's head spliced on the top.

The Mr.Vampire series is one of my all time favorite series.

When discovering that there was more, I imported movies (2-Saga Four) for the first time via Yes Asia.

I loved two! loved three! suprised Lam was missing from three, but Wu Ma, Chin Kar-Lok and Anthony Chan managed to fill that gap!

It's just something about Chinese Vampire movies, they're awesome!

Do you mean Mr Vampire 4?

IMO the comedy in number 4 wasn't quite up to par with the first three movies. Action was pretty tight though! One of Chin Kar Lok's best action performances I'd say.

yeah Chin Kar Lok took some serious bumps that movie, great stuff :P

Raoul,i understand why you think the comedy in the fourth one is not up to others.Let me ask you are Asian?If not,then this makes sense.I see we asians have different humour taste,myabe that's why some hk comedies are not fun for european and american people.
I watched this film with my family:sister,wife and mother,and i gave it to my 2 friends.We all liked it more than first part,even sifu Lam isn't in this.But really,i laughed to death.

Well Ekin, you're pretty spot on. I think that Western and Asian tastes are very different. One thing, I am part Asian, though Filipino and raised in Australia so I'm more Western than anything else.

BTW any Richard Ng or Kent Cheng fans here??

I think everyone has made quite valid points in terms of what they find funny. Personally, I'd prefer watching something serious rather than humorous because more than likely it won't hit the mark in my case.

As for Richard Ng, I'd have to say i'm undecided as to what to make of him. There are times when he's hilarious and all, but he seems to play childish roles too much. I'd like to know of any movies he's done where he plays something a bit different.

Kent Cheung has been in some cracker movies and he seems to have a good range of characters and emotions up his sleeve. He's also directed a fair bit too, right?

Richard Ng is my favourite comedy actor of all time.I prefer watching his Pom Pom series than aynthing with Chow Sing Chi.The same goes with Kent Cheng,he's talented and underrated actor.
Maybe i'm off topic but Kent Cheng won Best Actor title for Why Me?(by Hong Kong Film Awards,Golden Bauhinia,People's Choice Award) and best actor for The Log(by Golden Bauhinia).If you want something serious find To Be Number 1,Hero of Hong Kong 1949,Give Me Back,Legend of the Brothers,Powerful Four,Run And Kill and etc.And he besides these thriller-dramas he did lots of great comedies.

But i don't like to judge actors by their looks....

The Powerful Four is a movie I'm dying to see!

And Ekin is so right about not judging an actor/actress by their appearance. It's a shame that far too many actors get ahead based purely on their looks.

I would say it is going more that way in the last decade too with the rise of prettyboy/girl popstars-turned-actors.

Oh...and wasn't this all about Mr Vampire?!
